Manly Things

Tonight I gathered with Jose at his mother-in-laws place to watch crazy movies and eat shit. I was unaware (but not surprised) that other people were there and that they had been watching Julie & Julia (2009). This was fine. We all finished the film together. There was about an hour left. It was pretty good and inspired me to start blogging!

We then watched H. G. Lewis' The Gruesome Twosome (1967). We both realized we had seen it before, years ago, but since there was nothing else readily available we endured it once more. I actually had lots of fun on the first viewing. That's probably because I had a hard-on for Lewis. I'm still fascinated by some of his gore masterpieces. The idea that gore would be the focus of a film is beyond awesome. I wonder if there were any obscure, similar works before Lewis brought on the blood tide. Let me remind you that this is a dated film and you have to keep in mind a couple of things when viewing it. You can't expect gore akin to Dead Alive (1992); just enjoy it for what it is: a low budget, campy, early gore flick. This one is not as fun as 2,000 Maniacs (1964)or Blood Feast (1963).

I'd purchased a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon whiskey to ease the night away. Neither one of us are heavy drinkers but we like to let it loose from time to time. Drinking it straight was god-awful and I was reminded why soda was more to my liking. We finished the bottle over two days. But these are manly habits and should be practised on certain occasions. I for example smoke a pipe. It's not as cool as it sounds really. You can't ever seem to keep it lit and I prefer cigars anytime. I do smoke those fuckers every day.

So we are taking advantage of having Jose here in Miami for the holidays (he lives in California) and scheduling some serious Fuck-Outs! (our term for a wild movie marathong with plenty of soda and energy drinks, jokes and mexican or chinese food; sometimes pizza.) While having breakfest earlier in the week we both realized we wanted to experiment in straight-razor shaving. It had been on our minds for a while. I mean how much more manly could you get? Jose ordered a blade and strop set off ebay and I bought a practise blade at a local barber shop supply place. I cut my face three times and am considering abandoning the whole idea. I like to do things fast and I hear the learning curve on this is high. So I think I'll stick with safety razors from now on and get a good laugh when Jose slices his face apart.
